The World Press Photo of the Year 2012


Digital News said World Press Photo is founded in 1955an independent, non-profit organization based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. World Press Photo Organization is known for holding the world's largest and most prestigious annual press photography contest. The contest World Press Photo of the Year is determines winners in the following categories: Spot News, Portraits, People in the News, Contemporary Issues, General News, Daily Life, Sports Action, Nature, Sports Features, Arts and Entertainment.

Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda wins the World Press Photo of the Year 2011. Samuel Aranda was working in Yemen on assignment for The New York Times. The photo was taken Oct. 15 in a mosque in Sanaa(Yemen), it shows a woman holding her wounded son in her arms, inside a mosque used as a field hospital by demonstrators against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, during clashes 2011.

One of jury on the winning photo Nina Berman Comment: "In the Western media, we seldom see veiled women in this way, at such an intimate moment. It is as if all of the events of the Arab Spring resulted in this single moment - in moments like this. " Aranda's photo also took first place in the "People in the News Singles" category. He will get euro10,000 ($13,300) at an awards ceremony later this year.
